The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calls for a dramatic reduction in food waste.
Regardless of any statistics, all actors in the food chain have a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste, from those who produce and process foods to those who make foods available for consumption and ultimately consumers themselves.
Food waste is a bigger problem than many people realize. In fact, nearly one-third of all food produced in the world is discarded or wasted for various reasons. That equates to nearly 1.3 billion tons every year.
The problem with food waste is that it is not only a domestic issue, but also a systemic one, meaning that every step from supplier to consumer, is a constant battle to prevent waste.
All types of sea creatures are ingesting microplastics, and as they move up the food chain, these plastics will inevitably end up in the human gut.
If nothing is done, it is estimated that plastic waste will rise to 80 million metric tonnes a year by 2025.
