In the United States, over one-third of all available food goes uneaten through loss or waste. The staggering amount of wasted food in the country has far-reaching impacts on food security, resource conservation and climate change. In the United States, food waste serves as a dominant component of landfill masses, oil and freshwater waste, methane and CO2 emissions, damage to wildlife ecosystems, and substantial financial losses. When food is tossed aside, so too are opportunities for healthier communities, economic growth, and environmental prosperity.
To help galvanize national efforts to reduce food loss and waste, USDA and EPA announced the United States’ first-ever food loss and waste reduction goal in September 2015, calling for a 50-percent reduction by 2030. However, the government alone cannot reach this goal. It will require effort and action from the entire food system.
