In a region known for takeaway street food culture and single-use plastic, Southeast Asia’s limited waste management services and infrastructure contributes to mismanagement of more than 75 percent of plastic waste according to the UN Environment Programme.
Research has found that Americans waste about a pound of food per person each day, with people who have healthier diets rich in fruit and vegetables the most wasteful. About 150,000 tons of food is tossed out in US households each day, equivalent to about a third of the daily calories that each American consumes.
Food waste generation, happening throughout the entire food supply chain around the globe, is dominated by different dynamics, ultimately associated by the same unsustainable paradigm. Wasting food contributes to environmental pollution as well as to natural resources degradation and depletion, threatening food security.
